CPJ condemns guilty verdict in Jimmy Lai's fraud example in Hong Kong
On Tuesday, a Hong Kong court convicted Jimmy Lai, founder of the Next Digital Express media visitor and the pro-democracy paper Apple Daily, of fraud. Next Digital executive Wong Wai-keung was too convicted. Sentences accept yet to be appear.
CPJ's President Jodie Ginsberg condemned the verdict, saying, "Today'southward conviction of Jimmy Lai on trumped-up fraud charges shows that Hong Kong will stop at nothing to silence one of its fiercest media critics." She added, "Lai is conspicuously existence targeted for his journalism, and the persecution must stop. Hong Kong authorities should let Lai go gratuitous and drop all charges against him."
- Lai has been behind bars since Dec 2020 and is currently serving a twenty-month prison term for two other charges relating to his alleged involvement with unauthorized demonstrations. He is awaiting trial on national security charges, for which he faces life imprisonment; proceedings are expected to begin on December 1.
